68 CB450 K1

Post by pemdoc65 » Sat Oct 20, 2018 3:20 pm

I really did not need another motorcycle in the garage. However, I found this on Craigslist a few weeks ago, and I really like the K1. I have a few K0s in the works, and have a few K1 parts that have come along in the last few years. My K0 actually has a K1 exhaust on it, and I was about to replace it with a good K0 setup. What to do with the K1 exhaust? Find a K1 to put it on. The bike has been ridden hard, with 66,000 miles on the clock. However, the tank, seat, fenders and side covers are in pretty good shape. The frame is uncut with no cracks, and the electrical system works. Someone welded extensions onto the front fork ears to fit a later and larger headlight bucket, so those will be replaced. I plan to do a light restoration, leaving the faded red paint for now. The motor cranks over with compression (not sure how much yet).
So I contacted the guy, arranged to check it out while my 13 year old son and I were on our annual road trip to Maine from Kentucky, and bought it. It did almost 4000 miles on the carrier on my truck, but is finally back home. I hope to get started on it soon, but a garage cleanout and reorganization is underway. Of course, all of the pictures are sideways. I 'll have to figure out how to re-orient them. Sorry about that.

That looks good!
A strange thing to do with the headlight?
One day I'll have a running K1.....with luck

Great find! I love the K1 450’s as well. If you want to part with that 2into1 exhaust let me know. Good luck getting started on the project.

That exhaust is a bodged together mess. I think that it started its life as half of a 4 into 2 system. It prevents use of the rear brake, and the rear mount doesn't line up with anything. There is also a hole rusted through the underside. At least it still had the original exhaust flanges and spacers.

I found a proper headlight shell, repaired some cracks in it, and got it and the NOS fork ears painted today. The old fork ears were pretty jacked up by some unorthodox modifications. I still can't figure out why all of my pictures load sideways.

Now I just need to get the garage reorganized so I can get it inside and get the motor out. With 66,000 miles on it, I expect a rebuild. There was a lot of black oil residue inside the left header pipe when I removed it.

Are you posting pics from a tablet, phone or computer? My experience with a Windows computer is they always come out right-side up if they show that way on Windows 7, but Windows 10 apparently auto-corrects pictures in the viewer but they tend to revert to actual orientation when uploaded from 10, and of course many people have trouble with pics uploaded from a phone (particularly an iPhone)

I'm uploading from an iphone to a macbook. I did a test of a pic taken in landscape mode instead of portrait mode, and I think it may work.

It worked. It apparently has something to do with auto-rotation coding on the images (or something like that, according to online geeks).
